What charities do you support?

September 18th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Reading Teri's post about charitable casues made me wonder...

What groups do you support either financially or non-financially?

I am a member of the HRC (Human Rights Campaign). I do financial donations to them every year. They fight for equal rights among all people, no matter what. Their big fight the last couple of years has been marriage rights for gay couples.

I also support the American Cancer Society through multiple channels: a frined of mine at work does Daffodil Days, I have a friend who participates in the Relay for Life, both of whom I support with monitary donations. I also read tarot cards at a fundraiser every year for a group that participates in the 3 day walk. Half of all the proceeds from the fundraiser go to the ACS.

Locally I financially support the Mass order of Police. They set up scholorship funds for the families of officers who have dies while on duty.

I also support our local food banks with food donations throughout the holidays.

Wow, writing all that down makes me feel really good! I didn't realize what I really did before. Smile

We support The American Cancer Society through Relay for Life and Fun Runs in our community.
We also support our local food bank through food donations and women's shelters by donating clothes, shoes, and linens.

A lot of animal organizations (local humane society/SPCA/wildlife rescue, etc.) More likely to volunteer time and goods than cash though.

Also a local crisis nurseries my friend got me donating too a few years back.

My dh volunteers a lot of time at the public TV station - just his thing.

I used to volunteer much more time to the wildlife rescue group in the area (needed people in the summer which really worked well with my bust winter/spring work schedule), but since having children and concerns of disease I haven't done much. Kind of in search of a new cause for down the road when I have more time. Though there is the SPCA and stuff.

The food bank here is something I have looked into - a lot of opportunities to volunteer.

I also give scholarship money to my professional associations and alma mater.

Taxes: We pay 100% of the taxes we owe, reporting every cent of income and not taking a single extra penny in deductions. Does this really "count"? Heck yes! Government programs supported by taxes do so much more than I as an individual can. [This is not to say that I agree with how our government spends my money 100% of the time, but that's a whole other topic.]

Directed Cash: Mercy Corps, United Animal Nations, and my alma mater

Non-Cash Goods: Northwest Center (helps people with developmental disabilities) and/or Salvation Army

Blood: To my local blood bank ~ This is one that most people can do ... Even if they have no money to spare, they can probably "spare a pint"

Time: I was the chairperson of a local committee until recently (resigned because of our upcoming move); I have also done a variety of volunteer work in my community wherever I felt able to pitch in (participating in trash clean-up days, handing out tickets for community events, etc).

You hit on it, Koppur, when you said that giving makes you feel good. And it makes us feel connected to our communities and the world, part of something much bigger than ourselves.

We give mostly through our church but do support drives and walks when they come up.

Basically I just give out money when anyone ask. I've supported various charity fund raisers for breast cancer, liver disease, heart disease, etc, but I hate to know how much of the money goes to administration. I feel better about myself when I give to smaller groups, buy a meal for a homeless person or Thanksgiving dinner for a family.

I volunteer at a local food pantry and have also volunteered at an animal shelter.

I am leaving money in my will to The Nature Conservancy, Audubon Society and a few others.
