Budget Broken

July 11th, 2007 at 11:33 am

Well, looks like my fancy July budget is in the crapper. I got a letter in the mail stating I never paid my June payment for one of my student loans (I was POSITIVE I did...) So, now I have to come up with $135 ($120 plus late fee) to send them ASAP.

What is really bugging meis, I KNOW I wrote out that check. I remember thinking "Oooh, this payment will be early." And I updated my Debt Tally here with it. But I checked and the check number hasn't been cashed. I guess I will assume it got lost in the fricken mail. Grrrr.

So, looks like there will be some struggles for the rest of this month, as the budget was already pretty thin. We're trying to meet new budget amounts (gas in car, gas at home, electricity, groceries, etc)but this is the first month trying it and as it is, I don't think we are going to hit those new numbers. *sigh* What's another month of struggling when you've been strugging for almost 12 years, right?

These things are so frustrating. Don't give up on your budget, though.

At least it is only an extra $15 out of your account, since you had already deducted the $120 when you wrote the first check. Hopefully $15 won't put too great a strain on your budget plan.

Have you called to verify they never received it? Also, is there an electronic payment option so you can avoid this happening again?

Are you positive you actually mailed the check? That happened to me once. I got a notice that my mortgage payment was late. I had the payment stub. I had the check recorded in my checkbook register. And a week after getting the late notice, I found the unmailed payment in the bag I take to work everyday. I always toss the outgoing mail in there and mail it at my office. This one envelope got buried in there and was never mailed.

I would tell them when you mailed it and that it got lost in the mail. Maybe they would waive the late fee. It does not hurt to ask.

Definately not giving up on the budget. Finagled it a bit today, so it's not too bad now. I will call the place and ask them to waive the fee, definately. Wouldn't surprise me if I found it laying around the house somewhere. lol

    Thanks for the motivation all!
