Spending the Savings?

January 3rd, 2009 at 06:57 pm

I am thinking of spending $60 from my personal savings. Here's why: the only thing we pay for in terms of entertainment is $10 a month for Netflix. My BF plays World of Warcraft and he pays his $15 a month subscription fee himself. I play the Sims (I'm addicted and play for hours sometimes) which, after buying the program for my computer, is free.

There are about 6 expansion packs for the Sims game I play. For you non-gamers, this basically means there are 6 additional versions of the game I can play, along with the original. Each one costs about $20 each, plus tax.

Well, I have a friend who also plays, but she is buying Sims version 3, and I play version 2. She has all 6 expansion packs that I don't have, and told me she would sell them to me for $10 each. I think this is a great deal. It will literally give me 6 more versions of my game to play and keep me entertained for MONTHS. At least 6, if not the whole year.

Looking at it that way, it is $10 a game (half price), $60. Keeping me entertained for at least 6 months makes it $10 a month in entertainment, less if I keep playing after 6 months.

Anywho, I want these games (and I can also resell them when I get sick of them), and have the money in my account. But, I feel guilty spending so much of my personal savings.

LOL I guess I am looking to be approved to buy them. I'm watching Suze Orman right now and she is doing her Can I Afford It segment. Smile

I guess I would say no...don't spend the money. I understand your reasoning, but as a percentage of your savings that is a significant outlay simply for entertainment.

Can you rent these games for free from the library? Can you borrow from friend instead?

  2. Koppur Says:

Nope, can't rent them. And you have to have the CD Roms in the computer to play the game, so it wouldn't work to borrow them. Thanks for the comment! Smile

I might buy them, if I were you. If it's almost a year's entertainment for $60? Don't be penny wise and pound foolish and pass that up.

We are the same way. No budget, but we do occasionally buy video games or books and such that can entertain us for a good long time.

Is this a want or a need? Aren't you having surgery pretty soon? You may not be able to work for a while. I personally do not think that this is a good idea you would be spending more than 50% of your personal savings so as Suze O would say "you are not approved"

This won't be what you want to hear, but I think Amber got it right.

If you really really really want the game(s) and think they are worth the cost for the entertainment value, could you make a trade-off? For example, cut back the Netflix to the $5 per month subscription for 2 months and buy only 1 of the expansion packs from your friend? That way, you'd break even.

I too agree with Amber and everyone else about this. I just don't see any justification for dipping into your savings account for entertainment. I think that Entertainment should come out of your monthly budget. If your dipping into savings to pay for this than you can't afford it.

How much do you have in your savings? If you have a good amount I would say why not?

  8. Koppur Says:

I think you guys are right. Frown

  9. Ralph Says:

Well, I am a softie and in big time debt, but ANYWAY..., why not buy one at a time?

  10. Koppur Says:

I think that is what I am going to do, Ralph. Smile
