Unfair Unemployment

June 4th, 2008 at 03:56 pm

Since I was laid off from my job, I qualify for unemployment. That is the good news. The bad news is that I am getting a ridiculously low payment each week.

Last October when I was fired, I opened a claim and filed for Unemployment. It was denied. Now, since I am applying for Unemployment within 12 months of the last time I did, I had to reopen the same claim instead of opening a new one. What sucks about this is that they base my weekly unemployment check on the amount I was making when I first opened the claim. I was making about $20,000 LESS at that job than at the one I was just laid off from.

I was laid off from a job that paid in the high 40's, and am getting less that $300 a week. It won't even cover rent, let anlone anything else.

How unfair is that???

Man, that stinks. But, if it makes you feel any better, my hubby was making $60k when he got laid off and collects only $378 per week from our state. But, it is better than -0- I guess. Frown Hang in there!

You're right sage-girl...it is better than nothing. Thanks for the boost! Smile

Hehe. Not to laugh at your expense, but there is absolutely nothing fair about govt. assistance.

    That certainly does suck.

Actually, short-term disability in California is a state mandated program. The base year (that I got pregnant with my second) I made about $55k, but they take your best quarter during the year before your disablity and determine your benefits based on that. Since I got a very decent "overtime" bonus I was able to take the max benefit on my pregnancy leave, or about $830/week - at the time. I think technically you are s'posed to get like 50% of your pay but I was taking home 80% of my usual gross because of that bonus.

It's mostly administered by the same agency as unemployment is. So that reminded me.

I was glad to take it, but the system seemed deeply flawed to me.

I am sure they made the formula in their best attempt at fairness. It's kind of like an impossible thing, to make fair to everyone.

I can't help but think that a system like you find yourself in is one to save dollars though (as opposed to being intent on fairness).

Well, here's to a new job - VERY soon!!!

That's why I laugh (kind of) when people around here say stuff like : "well, at least he/she will get unemployment" @@

Obviously these people have never received unemployment here (not that I have either, but I deal with it on a goodly basis so I know the deal with it) because currently the cap on unemployment is $362/week. LMAO!

As someone said, it is better than nothing, but if/when you're used to making $1000+ a week, what good does 35-40% of your regular check really do? Unless you have saved . . . . ALOT!

Wow, in TN you are capped at around $250/wk. I was laid off in January when my salary was $70K and I got the max of about $250.

Do you have any recourse? Anywhere else you can go to complain or have them reasses the situation?
    Keep your chin up friend!

These are hard times and it sounds like you are having your share; hope the interview goes well. Boston is a big city, it's got to be expensive living there; scares me to just drive through it.
