Urban Gardening

May 18th, 2008 at 04:00 pm

One things I really miss about our old apartment was my garden. I had a good size one in the back yard, and I used to grow flowers, herbs, and once I attempted pumpkins (it didn't work). At our new place, there is nice landscaping all around and some palces that look like they either are peoples gardens or used to be people's gardens. If no body gardens in one of these spots this year, next year I will claim it for my own use. Until then, I am attempting Urban Gardening.

On our kitchen windowsill I have a cactus, some pretty flowers (no idea what they are called) and some sage. Yesterday I went out and got some stuff for our mini deck.

We have a small deck out the back door that we share with the people next to us. On our side, I have a really good size potted tomato plant. It should be sprouting some tomtos within a couple of weeks. Yay!

I lso picked up some windown boxes to hang over the side of out railing. We have room for 4, but I only picked up two for now to see how they do. In one I am going to put 3 cilantro plants (my fave herb!), and in the other, 2 lavender plants and one peppermint plant. I love having fresh peppermint for making our own peppermint tea, or putting in fresh lemonade. And we cook with a lot of cilantro in the summmer. The lavender is so pretty, and I dry it for use in herbalism.

Hopefully these will do well. If they do, I am going to do another windowbox with marigold (I also dry those for herbalism), and maybe some basil. Smile

I live in the suburbs but am blessed with about 1.5 acres of lawn. I LOVE mowing and tending to our flower beds. A few years ago I fell in LOVE with gardening. We have three rather large flower beds, a flower "moat" (complete wrap around the house) and a rock garden which I started in a rather "dead zone" of our property. Wherever the family goes or along our trails, we gather a rock or two and add it to the garden.

I use Topsy Turvy planters for my tomatoes, cukes, red/green peppers, hot peppers, zucchini and squash. I have a 12'x12' raised bed that is home to four rows of onions, two rows of lettuce and about six herb plants. This year I added a bamboo tee pee for pole beans to grow up on.

Tuesday I am going to plant about 75 strawberry plants in an area that is very rich in soil, perfect sun and well drained. The kids love them. They are going right next to a 50' red/black raspberry patch I put in last year.

The new garden this year is another dead zone. About 12'x16' of lawn between the pool deck and pool house. Pretty much a "no fly" zone so I am putting in a Japanese garden. A little mulch, a little pea gravel, some climbing ivy, rocks, etc.

In a nut shell, step by step and little by little I work the land and accept the blessings and grace of God to inspire me. My wife loves to garden too but her schedule doesn't leave her too much time until summer.

Garden as much as you can as you help God continue to create.

FINALLY FOR ALL YOU GARDENERS WHO DO NOT HAVE A LOT OF LAND, TRY GOOGLING "TOPSY TURVY" PLANTERS. YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT WHAT YOU CAN GROW WITH VERY LITTLE, IF ANY SPACE!!!! HAPPY GARDENING AND GOD BLESS!

Your working with what you have and you haven't given into the space restrictions. You are a true gardener.
