I need coupon help...

June 14th, 2007 at 06:47 pm

I really want to get to using coupons and such to cut our grocery budget down, but I have no idea where to start. I never get any circular with coupons. I go through the ones my Mums saves for me, but can never find a lot of them to clip.

Honestly, the whole thing seems very overwhelming to me.

However, I am dtermined to become a coupon queen this summer and would love some help. Any ideas or tips someone can pass along would be very much appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of good palces to get coupons, or good websites to learn about couponing from, I'd apprecaite that as well.

I know I can count on my frugal family!
Thanks all!
Smile

Do you have any local friends who are couponers? If so, ask them to tell you the local tricks of the trade, ie. which stores double and to what value, which newspapers have the best Sunday coupons, etc. For example, my local paper has bad coupons, but I buy the Sunday paper for a city some 250 miles away at the store solely for the coupons (well, that's not true- it turns out that there news coverage is really good, too!)

Another option to to pay a nominal fee to a coupon broker and buy coupons for specific items. See: http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2007/01/27/coupon-brokers-take-the-work-out-of-clipping-coupons/
    for more on brokers.

Coupons are best if you want to save on toiletry items, such as soap, shampoo, razor, tampax, etc.... I don't pay for these things anymore. I think twice if I have to pay $1 per item.

Saving $$ on grocery by coupons are more difficult because high $$ coupons for grocery is rare. (You can find $3 off for razor all the time, but not for food items.) Also, most of grocery coupons are for junk food. The best way to save on grocery is to study store flier every week, and see if they have any campaigns.

For example, Betty Crocker is giving away free milk this month at Albertson's and Safeway. I bought 6 items from Safeway using their in-ad coupons, paid $8 for them, and got 2 gallons of free milk. (The price of a gallon of milk is little more than $4.) I did this deal three times, so, I got 6 gallons of free milk this month.

You need to look for this type of deal for grocery items. I think website such as Fat Wallet or Refund Cents have information about these deals.

Oh, as for getting coupons, buy Sunday papers. They have coupon inserts every week. You can also buy coupons from e-bay. People sell coupons all the time.

    Hope this helps a bit.

Get a Sunday newspaper in your town for the largest city nearest to you.
Match the sales from your grocery store flyer with coupons.
Also go to hot couponworld.com. (There is so much info. there, you will be busy for hours.)
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
